  10.  AB    Forty-four children infected through vertical transmission, from a total
  11.        of 146 born to HIV-positive mothers, were studied. Immunological data
  12.        were analysed and compared with those of the noninfected children. Two
  13.        transmission patterns emerge from the clinical and immunological
  14.        characteristics: (i) infants infected during pregnancy with severe
  15.        immunodeficiency and clinical manifestations before the age of 1 year,
  16.        and (ii) children probably infected perinatally, who have better
  17.        clinical outcome. Immunological data are important for prognosis and
  18.        early therapeutic protocols to be established.
